How to control our emotions effectively
The past few years have been an absolute emotional whirlwind, haven't they?
I mean, from anxiety and loneliness to frustration and sadness, the world has taken us on a wild rollercoaster ride of emotions.
But here's the thing: the world is moving at lightning speed, and our emotions are struggling to keep up.
It's like we're caught in a tornado of different feelings all at once. That's why the concept of 'emotional plurality' is becoming more relevant these days.
A recent study, published in the academic journal Canadian Psychology, dives deep into the topic of emotional dysregulation.
Emotional dysregulation is basically when we can't manage or control our emotions effectively.
It happens to the best of us because, let's face it, our brains and bodies get overwhelmed.
Now, the researchers behind this study not only define emotional dysregulation but also explore how we can process those overwhelming emotions and keep them in check.
First off, give yourself some dedicated time to feel whatever it is you're feeling. Find a cozy spot, sit down, and just let those emotions wash over you. It may seem strange, but trust me, it works.
Next, pay attention to the physical sensations that come with your emotions. Tune in to what your body is telling you. Are your muscles tense? Is your heart racing? It's all part of the emotional package.
Now comes the interesting part: try to put a name to the emotion you're experiencing. Sounds simple, right? Well, sometimes it's trickier than you think. But don't worry, even if you can't find the perfect word to describe it, the act of trying can bring some clarity.
Once you've identified the emotion, take a moment to reflect on whether it's a justified response to the situation you're facing. Is it an appropriate reaction? Or is it coming from somewhere else, like a past experience? This self-reflection can be eye-opening.
If your emotion is justified, dig deeper and ask yourself what it's trying to tell you. Is there an action you can take? Maybe you need to show yourself some self-compassion or reach out to someone you trust for support. Don't ignore those valuable messages your emotions are sending.
Now, here's where it gets fascinating.
If your emotion isn't justified, try shifting your perspective. Imagine you're advising a friend in the same situation. What would you tell them? How would you help them reframe the situation? Sometimes, a fresh outlook can work wonders.
Confronting your emotions head-on is no easy task. But trust me when I say that dealing with your feelings in a healthy and productive way can have a massive impact on your mental health.
That's why tools like mood diaries and emotion wheels have become all the rage lately. They help you gain a better understanding of your emotions and where you're at, so you can make conscious decisions about what you need moving forward.
So, the next time you find yourself overwhelmed or struggling to identify what's going on inside, take a moment to unravel the tangled web of emotions. It might seem a little silly or fluffy at first, but believe me, it can make a real difference—especially as we continue navigating the uncertainty of our ever-changing world.
